FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Start here...should I buy an upright or canister?
This is a personal preference, based on your needs and wants. Years ago, before carpeting was the norm, canisters were more popular since they offered the hose wands and floor tools which were ideal for cleaning bare floors. There was no need for a power nozzle since rugs were not glued down. With the advent of carpet, so too came the need for a powered nozzle.
While the canister offers versatility in cleaning everything, from carpet to stairs and bare floor cleaning, it can also be considered somewhat cumbersome to manipulate for some people.
The upright vacuums have come a long way since the Hoover was first introduced. The first upright models that came out were easy to use, but did not offer any attachment cleaning. The attachment tools were fastened on the bottom by the roller and didn't offer much suction.
Many of today's uprights offer superior cleaning power for carpeting as well as exceptional suction for attachments. The Radiance from Riccar is the best we have found for bare floor cleaning with its powerful state of the art Tandem cleaning system. It switches from carpeting to bare floors with the flip of a switch at your fingertips.
The canisters, while still a bit cumbersome to some people are still the right choice for the right application with their versatility.
Do bagless vacuums really save you money?
While you don't need to buy bags for a bagless vacuum, there are other costs that could cancel out the cost advantage. Bagless vacuums still require filters which need to be cleaned often and most replaced yearly. Sometimes the cost of these filters can cost more than buying bags. Some bagless vacuums are also messier and can have a higher rate of blockage or mechanical problems.
How long should my vacuum last?
Consumer research shows that the average life of most vacuums is 2-3 years, however many better quality and well maintained vacuums can last 10, 15 or even 20 years.
Considering a central vacuum? ... Rutten's recommended central vac
Central vacuum systems are powered by a central unit located in your basement, garage or utility room. Pipes run through your house carry the dirt to the central unit which vents the dust outside. Central vacs are typically 3-5 times more powerful than portable vacuums.
Other advantages include not having to carry around a heavy vacuum, longer life for your carpet and furniture and 100 percent filtration. Central vacuums can also increase the market value of your home by up to $2,000.
